What are Mat Classes, and would it be good for me?

What are Mat Classes at Aspire, and would it be good for me?

As Physios, we constantly are asked, “What is Pilates and would it be good for me?”.

Our Mat Classes have grown in popularity over the last few years. The number of our Gentle, Open, Mums and Bubs and Pregnancy Mat Classes have grown considerably over the last year. We are always putting on more classes to accomodate for the demand. Here at Aspire we want to give you as many choices of class times to fit into your busy schedules.

So what is this Pilates?

Pilates is a total body exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, to rehabilitate injured World War 1 soldiers, and later was used for strength and conditioning in dancers.

More recently it has become widely popular as is low impact, while focusing on muscle strength, endurance and flexibility.

What are Clinical Exercise Classes, and how is it different to Pilates?

Clinical Exercise Classes run by a Physiotherapist is used to help you recover from an injury, overcome a persistent pain, or improve your movement patterns. Physiotherapists often offer Clinical Mat Classes, as the classes are Pilates informed to help our clients recover from injury, or overcome long standing aches and pains. Often these persistent pains come from movement patterns that are just not that great, so through our Mat Classes we can facilitate and supervise new movement patterns. This allows our clients to see positive change for the long term, and not just for a few days relief.

What are the benefits of Mat Classes?

  • Improve core and pelvic floor strength

  • Recover from injury or pregnancy by rebuilding strength

  • Improve posture

  • Improve movement patterns

  • Enhance performance at work, home or in your sport

  • Stress management and mindfulness
